Eloy's Art Studio

Hi, I'm Eloy. Welcome to my art studio. It would be fun to plan a visit. In the backyard I/we would exhibit and critique the finished pieces and in the front we can talk. Please browse through the rest of this site for more info. Below is my statement. Thanks.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I create artistic problems for myself. These problems are mostly intellectual but some are spiritual, experimenting with color, shape and form mainly in abstractions, but also with realism. I often react with what I have learned through school but also instinctually and innately to these problems with painting; especially when the piece deals with color. Against the conceptual and minimalist movements and theories that I was taught in art school, I am not. I’ve practiced almost every style to understand art. Now I incorporate photography as well and self-publish eBooks.

I have always been sensitive to my surroundings. Living and working in New York City always provides inspiration and motivation to continue exploring painting and its profound power to reveal beauty to me. Through this concrete jungle, I celebrate ugliness and contribute to moving society forward in a way that only artistic vision can. I've been most reactive to daily symbolism and icons of mass marketing and television. FAST-FAST-FAST imagery – wealth, sex, beauty; all that is desirable in this world made but a suggestion to mass consciousness in this city. In spite of this mass media marketing we are left wandering in a sea of confusion, alone-ness and isolation. It's what I feel as I walk down one of its streets with burnt-out lamp posts, rows of windows and cornices that I paint into a composition later on canvas. I want to succeed utilizing dramatic color art that addresses this.

I see the graffitied walls of New York City’s landmarks and experience its delis on the corner and the flying awnings of its bodegas in different hoods; my stain photography deals with the nostalgia and phenomena of seeing images in a neo-expressionist universe. They are my latest muses and have inspired me to develop this style which I began with paint so long ago with its askew perspective and riotous colors.

During these turbulent times and after I hope that when we look at art work it can be appreciated as a representation of the mood and emotion of the times that I have lived. For these are my expressions of them. In my works I hope to become the paint so as to represent these times in a way that will crystalize the empathy I have for the people that make up these neighborhoods and compositions for me.

I feel for the business closings and am absolutely on board with revitalizing and re-energizing the communities of New York City. Such is the aim with the latest eBook I have published entitled Quaramania.
